PHSU Expands Global Presence with New Medical School in Tortola, BVI

Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU), a renowned institution, originally founded in Puerto Rico with a location in St. Louis, announces the establishment of a new medical school in Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI) which has received provisional accreditation from the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM). This expansion marks a significant milestone in PHSU’s mission to enhance healthcare education globally, while celebrating its strong ties to St. Louis.

The PHSU School of Medicine at BVI plans to host its first class of 50 students in August 2025. These students at the new international location will complete their first two years of medical education locally in BVI, benefiting from small class sizes and a student-faculty ratio of 1:8.

Upon completing these foundational years, students have the option to apply for rotations at major hospitals, either in St. Louis, MO or Puerto Rico, in years three and four.

“PHSU Tortola, BVI is a reflection of the continuous growth of Ponce Health Sciences University and our commitment to training more physicians to meet the growing global healthcare demands,” said Dr. Gino Natalicchio, President of Ponce Health Sciences University. “These new facilities will not only provide our students with additional options for rotations in the United States but will also play a crucial role in reducing the physician shortage in Puerto Rico and the United States over the next decade. This expansion is part of our broader contributions to the health sector, reaffirming our dedication to educational excellence and the improvement of global healthcare.”

PHSU Tortola BVI has preliminary accreditation with the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) and will offer an accredited medical degree designed to allow students to take the necessary U.S. exams.

“With over 45 years of experience in training leaders in the field of medicine, PHSU is uniquely positioned to bring its extensive knowledge to the preparation of future physicians in the region. We remain committed to academic excellence and the training of highly skilled professionals.

PHSU Tortola BVI strengthens our track record of success and highlights our commitment to continuing to make significant contributions to the global health sector,” said Natalicchio.

PHSU’s expansion to Tortola builds upon its longstanding collaborations with healthcare partners in St. Louis, fostering global healthcare solutions and cultural exchange. The university looks forward to further strengthening these connections and contributing to healthcare innovation on a global scale.
