A Future Worth Investing in
Financial aid is an important step for students seeking help to pay for our graduate programs. Our goal is to make your cost of education as affordable and as manageable as possible.
The financial aid team is staffed with professionals ready to advise students and help to lay out the options to afford college. We can work together to get you where you want to go.
Types of Financial Aid
Grants
Grants are given to students without an obligation to pay them back, typically. Most grants are awarded only to students with financial need.
Loans
Loans are borrowed to pay for college, typically from the federal government. Loans are required to be repaid once the student has graduated or dropped below half-time enrollment.
Scholarships
Scholarships are a great resource to pay for college and don’t require repayment. Be sure to apply for the scholarships from PHSU St. Louis if you plan on attending.
Military Aid
The United States Military offers various educational benefits that range from scholarship awards to loans that must be repaid. Military students have many ways to fund their degree at PHSU St. Louis as a Yellow Ribbon School participating in veterans’ education programs.

Financial Aid FAQ and Additional Information
What’s the next step after I’ve submitted all the required documents?
The next step is the awarding of financial aid by PHSU St. Louis. We’ll prepare the award notification for the student, and once it’s complete, we’ll send the Notification of Award to each student.
What’s the difference between a Direct Subsidized Loan vs Direct Unsubsidized Loan?
First and foremost, graduate students are only eligible for Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and there is no requirement to demonstrate financial need.
In general, the primary difference is that the federal government will pay the interest on a Direct Subsidized Loan while the student is still in college or while the loan is in deferment. However, for a Direct Unsubsidized Loan, students are responsible for the interest as soon as the loan has been taken out.
What is a Direct Loan-PLUS Graduate Loan?
These are loans only available to eligible graduate or professional students at schools that participate in the Direct Loan program.
According to studentaid.gov, to receive a graduate PLUS loan, you must meet all of these requirements:
- be a graduate or professional student enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school in a program leading to a graduate or professional degree or certificate;
- not have an adverse credit history (unless you meet certain additional eligibility requirements)
- meet the general eligibility requirements for federal student aid.
What will I need to submit with my FAFSA application?
To complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will need:
- Your Social Security Number
- Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
- Your federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned.
- Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
- Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
- An FSA ID to sign electronically.
If you are a dependent student, then you will also need most of this information for your parent(s).
Does PHSU St. Louis offer need-based financial aid?
As part of the evaluation for each student, the Financial Aid Office will take into consideration the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is the amount that the student should contribute towards his/her cost of education, and it is determined by the Federal Government. The need analysis consists of the following basic calculation: Cost of Attendance minus EFC equals Financial Need.
As part of the analysis, it will be considered any other expected financial aid (external funds such as Vocational Rehabilitation, Veteran Administration, military scholarships, and any other grant or scholarship). Note: A student cannot receive financial assistance in excess of the determined Financial Need.
This EFC will be used as PHSU decides on amounts for needs-based funds or scholarships, if available for students.
What are the financial benefits for veterans at PHSU St. Louis?
PHSU St. Louis is committed to supporting active-duty and veteran service members with ways to afford an education from our institution. As a Yellow Ribbon School, we help members of the armed forces take the next step in their health sciences career.
The Department of Veteran Affairs provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition.
